World Mathematics Championships Vietnam 2025

Students from St. Paul American School Hanoi joined participants from across Vietnam for a full day of challenging and engaging math competitions. The World Mathematics Championships (WMC) Junior Qualifier 2025, held on Saturday, October 4, in Ho Chi Minh City creates an environment where mathematicians get to perform and show off their training.

Our students had a great time at the event, and also got to explore Ho Chi Minh City, visiting the post office to send postcards to family, getting a glimpse at Reunification Palace, and taking in panoramic views from Bitexco building’s top floor. The team got in extra steps with a scavenger hunt and taking in the high energy of the famous walking street.

St. Paul Students Compete in Math

2025 World Mathematics Championships Vietnam Junior Qualifier

Imagine a world where mathematics is a sport.

A Celebration of Mathematical Thinking

The WMC turns mathematics into a lively, team-based experience that values creativity, problem-solving, and strategy. Participants analyzed, reasoned, and collaborated while working through a variety of rounds designed to test their mathematical and teamwork skills.

Students took part in a series of in-person events:

  • Duel: A quick 1v1 game that tested mental agility and focus.
  • Pursuit: A 45-minute relay in which teams solved and delivered answers in a large circular track setup.
  • Innovation – Mathapult: A hands-on challenge where teams built models using given materials to meet specific criteria.
  • Shuttle: A team round that required clear communication and coordination among three problem-solvers.
  • Crypto: A decoding challenge using ciphers that combined logic and pattern recognition.
  • Lightning: The final event of the day where teams worked against the clock to solve up to 30 open-response problems.

Online Qualifying Rounds

Before the main event, students also participated in online challenges throughout September. These rounds developed different types of mathematical reasoning and strategy:

  • Confidence: An open-book activity that encouraged careful risk assessment and decision-making.
  • Codebreaker: A sequence-based problem set that emphasized logic and systematic thinking.
  • Mathematician: A collection of advanced open-response problems that required deep analysis and persistence.

These online activities were a well-rounded test of skill, strategy, and mathematical understanding.

The Spirit of Competition

The atmosphere at the event was energetic and supportive. Teams planned strategies, discussed solutions, and celebrated. Each round rewarded clear thinking, communication, and perseverance. By the end of the day, everyone gathered for the medal ceremony, where students were recognized for their performance and teamwork.

A Proud Moment for St. Paul

Three St. Paul students took a place on the awards stage, Yunjae won a gold medal in Alliance, Loui won a bronze medal in Personal Endeavor, and Loua won a bronze medal in Dynamic.

We congratulate all our students for their participation in the competition. They approached every challenge with determination and curiosity, representing St. Paul American School Hanoi with distinction. Their participation in this event shows the power of collaboration, critical thinking, and a genuine passion for learning.

Congratulations to all our participants, we are proud of you.
