Exciting Updates from St. Paul Elementary

Eagle News September

Welcome to the fourth season of Eagle News! Our student reporters, are back to share the latest updates, interviews, and stories from around campus. This edition is packed with exciting news, from our brand-new playground to upcoming cultural celebrations.

A New Playground for Our Students

One of the most exciting changes this year is the addition of our new playground structure. Students were eager to share their first impressions.

“The new playground is big and fun,” said one student.

Another student shared, “It’s made really well, but I don’t like that it gets too muddy.”

One student simply described it as “cute,” reminding us that sometimes the best things in life are simple.

To give us more insight, a student interviewed our Principal, Ms. Kim, who explained the vision behind the project:

A PLACE TO PLAY

Our school needed a playground. We already had spaces for Foursquare and soccer, but I wanted a place where children could come together, play, and build community. Even though some of the monkey bars are a bit short, I wanted swings, climbing, and shared play spaces that help children interact and form friendships.

So far, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. From swings to bucket swings, the playground has quickly become a favorite gathering spot during the school day.

Playground Rules with Mr. Wade

With any new play area, it’s important to have clear guidelines. Reporter Jinu sat down with Mr. Wade, our PE teacher, to talk about the rules.

  • Everyone is encouraged to play nicely and take turns.
  • When the whistle blows, equipment must be returned, and students should line up.
  • On the sandpit, students should share materials and play fairly.
  • On the jungle gym, kindness is key, and students are encouraged to invite others to join.
  • For soccer, multiple grades can play together, with a limit of two balls per game at the big net. Responsibility is emphasized: if a ball goes behind the net, the players must retrieve it.

And if conflicts arise? Students are encouraged to solve them together, use rock-paper-scissors as a tiebreaker, and if needed, ask a teacher for help.

Welcoming Our New Teachers

This year, we are thrilled to welcome five new teachers to St. Paul Elementary:

  • Grade 5 Homeroom Teacher – Loves working with students and especially enjoys teaching our social-emotional learning curriculum.

  • Grade 1 Homeroom Teacher – Appreciates the warm, friendly atmosphere at St. Paul.

  • English Learning Support Teacher for Grades 1 and 4 – Values the collaboration and support among staff.

  • English Learning Support Teacher for Grades 3 and 5 – Admires the kindness and generosity of both students and staff, always feeling like part of a team.

  • Elementary Music Teacher – Loves how welcoming the community is, and is inspired by students’ enthusiasm for learning and creativity.

Swimming Lessons with Mr. Mark

Swimming is an important part of our PE program, especially during the warm months. A student interviewed Mr. Mark, another of our PE teachers, about the purpose behind swim lessons.

He also reminded us of pool rules:

  • No running or silly behavior around the pool
  • No dunking friends
  • Always bring a towel and shoes

Safety and fun go hand-in-hand at the pool.

WATER SAFETY

The main purpose is water safety. It’s so important that everyone knows how to be safe on holidays or trips. Swimming is also a fantastic form of exercise.

Looking Ahead: The Moon Festival

One of the most exciting upcoming events is the Moon Festival on October 6. Student reporters shared what’s planned:

  • Morning Assembly: A traditional lion dance in the gym for the whole school.
  • Classroom Activities: Lower elementary will enjoy mask painting, lantern decorating, and coloring projects.
  • Gym Activities: Upper elementary students will also engage in mask painting and lantern decorating.

The Moon Festival is a cherished tradition that celebrates family, gratitude, and togetherness under the year’s brightest full moon.

Building Community at St. Paul

From new playground structures and swimming lessons to welcoming new teachers and preparing for cultural celebrations, St. Paul American School Hanoi continues to provide opportunities for learning, play, and connection.

We’re excited for everything this school year has in store, and we’re proud of our Eagle News reporters for keeping our community informed and inspired.
