Ms. Kate Green

High School ELA Teacher

St. Paul American School Hanoi is proud to celebrate High School English Language Arts teacher Ms. Kate Green, who has earned her Master of Science (MSc) in Learning and Teaching from the University of Oxford.

While earning a degree from one of the world’s leading universities is an impressive achievement, what makes Ms. Green’s journey especially meaningful is the inspiration behind it—and how it continues to benefit her students today.

A Dream Inspired by a Student

Many teachers inspire their students. For Ms. Green, one of her students inspired her.

While teaching in Turkey, she watched a student she had taught for many years overcome challenges and gain admission to a top university in the United States. Witnessing his growth made her realize that she, too, could pursue a goal that once felt beyond reach.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she began exploring master’s programs and discovered Oxford’s MSc in Learning and Teaching. She knew immediately that she wanted to take on the challenge.

Balancing Teaching, Travel, and Research

Ms. Green began the program in 2021 while living in Istanbul. Although designed for full-time teachers, the program required regular in-person attendance. For her first year, she balanced teaching with frequent travel between Turkey and the United Kingdom to attend Oxford seminars, becoming the only member of her cohort traveling internationally.

She originally planned to finish the degree in 2023, but her move to Vietnam and transition to life at St. Paul led her to temporarily pause the program. After settling into her new home and school community, she returned to her research, completed her thesis, and successfully finished the program in 2025.

In May 2026, she traveled back to Oxford to celebrate the milestone by graduating in person.

Turning Research into Better Teaching

What makes this achievement particularly valuable for St. Paul students is that Ms. Green’s research directly connects to their learning experiences.

Her first-year research project explored the culture of supplementary academic programs across Turkey and Asia, including Vietnam. Her dissertation focused on how students respond to different forms of feedback on their writing.

Combined with insights gained from studying alongside educators from around the world and learning from leading researchers, these experiences have expanded her understanding of teaching and strengthened the strategies she brings into the classroom every day.

A Home in Hanoi, A Community at St. Paul

Since moving to Vietnam, Ms. Green has embraced life in Hanoi, from its rich history and food culture to learning the Vietnamese language.

She also feels fortunate to be part of the St. Paul community. Having worked at many schools throughout her career, she describes St. Paul as a place that feels especially welcoming and supportive.

When asked to describe St. Paul students in three words, she chose “kind, passionate, and sincere”—qualities she believes make the community truly special.

Always Growing

Looking ahead, Ms. Green hopes to use her research training to continue improving her teaching and to help students develop strong research skills of their own as they prepare for university.

For her, earning an Oxford degree is not the end of the journey.

As she puts it, “The goal is always to keep on growing.”

Congratulations to Ms. Kate Green on this outstanding achievement. Her dedication to lifelong learning continues to inspire our community and enrich the experiences of students at St. Paul American School Hanoi.
