St. Paul Wins Medals in Math Competition

St. Paul American School Hanoi proudly sent some of its top high school and middle school mathematicians to Olympia School to compete in the annual Maths Olympiad. This prestigious mathematics competition is a highly anticipated event, featuring three 30-minute rounds of STEM-related activities designed to challenge students’ problem-solving skills, creativity, and teamwork.

Ten schools from Hanoi participated in the event, with each school sending two levels of teams, one team representing the high school level and the other representing the middle school level. The competition was fierce, as students faced off in innovative and engaging rounds that tested not only their mathematical knowlege but also their ability to think critically under pressure.

Math team Awards

The Senior Division team from St. Paul earned a silver medal for their outstanding performance and finished in 2nd place. Our St. Paul Eagles collectively secured bronze medals for 3rd place in the overall school competition, a testament to the skill and dedication of all participants. Way to go, Eagles!

Theme for 2024 Math Olympiad: Save the Planet.

The theme for the 2024 Maths Olympiad was “Save the Planet,” which inspired a variety of environmentally focused challenges. Each round presented unique and thought-provoking tasks:

  1. Treasure Hunt: In this round, teams had to solve complex math problems tied to environmental themes to help “clean up” the environment.

  2. Maths & Fun Physical Activity: Students combined mathematical reasoning with physical activity in a dynamic round that required teamwork and quick thinking. For example, one challenge involved using origami skills to create decoding tools, which were then used to answer riddles spread across the campus.

  3. Maths & Building Structures: The final round tested students’ engineering and mathematical skills. Teams were tasked with designing and constructing a device capable of holding the maximum amount of water after being dropped from the second floor. This activity required innovative problem-solving to balance durability with functionality.

The Maths Olympiad provided an excellent opportunity for students to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios. By integrating math with environmental and physical challenges, the competition fostered a deeper appreciation for math and its relevance to everyday life. The collaborative nature of the event encouraged students to work together, exchange ideas, and meet peers from other schools.

St. Paul American School Hanoi is incredibly proud of its students for their exceptional achievements and dedication throughout the competition. Events like the Maths Olympiad not only celebrate academic excellence but also nurture the critical thinking and teamwork skills essential for future success.

Congratulations once again to our talented Eagles for their remarkable performance, and we look forward to working towards next year.
